As we were unpacking, I put my hands in a box that had a broken vase in it. I realized the vase was broken when glass cut my finger. It started bleeding badly and it hurt, but I thought I took it out and moved on to get the job done.
As the days went on, my finger did not stop hurting. I looked to see if I saw glass, but did not see anything. I didn't want to be a baby, so I overlooked the pain and figured it was just because the cut was deep.
Around two weeks went by, and I finally came to terms that there was probably something in my finger. I didn't know where to go, so I went to an urgent care. The lady came in and thought there was something in there (the skin had closed by now) and said she could dig around and see what she could find. She also gave me the option of getting x-rays first. I was definitely not comfortable letting someone just "dig around" so I went for the x-rays.
When the x-rays came back, she called and said there was glass in the finger and I could see if she could maybe take it out, or I could go to the hand surgeon. I felt much more comfortable going to a hand surgeon, so I chose that!
I went to the appointment fully prepared for them to open my finger up and get it out. However, after seeing the x-rays they thought the glass was on a nerve and told me I needed to have SURGERY! Big surprise...
I was secretly (or maybe not so secretly) freaking out over having surgery on such a little thing. After talking to others, I knew it was the right thing to do though.
The surgery was scheduled for 6 am Monday morning. I felt better that it was so early. When I got there, they put an IV in my right arm and another needle to stop the blood in my left arm. They then took me to the OR and gave me some very happy drugs!
The surgery went super fast, but it took me a looooong time to feel with it again. I sat in the recovery area and sipped soda slowly and ate graham crackers even more slowly. When I was able to go to the bathroom, I was able to leave!
When we got home, I spent the day pretty out of it. It was also super tough to function due to this HUGE and heavy thing on my hand!
On Wednesday, I went back to get it off. It felt soo good to have it off and just the small wrap on my finger!
My finger/hand was still pretty sore during the week. Then, yesterday, I got my stitches taken out!! It still doesn't look awesome, but I am starting to feel back to normal. I need to be careful with it, but should be good to go in no time.
Lesson of the day: Wear gloves while moving!
